2 days before moving from San Diego, some good friends gave me the best birthday present ever!
...a private viewing of the Muppet Movie after hours in their art theater!!!
it was so much fun and truly a dream come true. the day after that, we held a massively unsuccessful garage sale (our signs blew down but we didn't figure that out for hours), packed up and moved to our new spectacular Santa Monica home.
as i am now leaving the 40-hour desk job, work week FOREVER, i think this is most fitting for the month's theme:

p.s. the Muppet's Green Album just came out. Covers of all their songs by Weezer, OK Go and the like. I took a listen. ...eh. at least people are showing appreciation for muppet awesomeness.

Someday, and maybe sometime more details in another post, I will stay in the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam but today if wishes made things true…I’d be on a plane to Tokyo before November 23. And shortly thereafter having a slumber party at the LLOVE Hotel (in the mattress room, if possible). This very Japanese pop-up hotel is an art/architect collaboration between Japanese architect Jo Nagasaka and Lloyd director Suzanne Oxenaar (plus several guest Dutch and Japanese artists) and I really, really want to jump on these beds!

As an extra layer, referring to the outdoor, you will find some leaves growing on strange places. The room is not suitable for business men on a business trip, but very suitable for tourists not in a hurry, people in love, and everyone who knows how to enjoy life!

Truly, liberty prints and detailed, paint-by-number floral patterns have been a bit on overkill lately but I couldn't resist checking out Liberty of London's collection at Target.
And discovered, when it comes to floral, it's definitely appealing when it has to do with gardening!

Didn't see them in stock though so I instead decided on some posh, Liberty loungewear and am now sipping a cocktail and pseudo-channeling my own glamorous grandmother. Doubt that's turn-on for the Boo but it's inspired me to shop for patio furniture on craigslist and I just now found an awesome new loungey couch.
I'm deliberately keeping quiet about the former Neat Freak 101 postings because they inspired a sort of madness around here. We've thrown almost all our furniture out!
It's like the yearly move has been transformed into a massive redecorating party instead.
Who knows what will happen now?

Neat Freak 101 - Day 5

Punishment = throw out everything that hasn't been used for over a year
Grade = F = I barely attempted this. Threw out one jacket and decided it wasn't worth the effort.
Reward = take a week off of stupid neat freak class.
It's February, which is a very indulgent month for me and the Boo.
I'm not going to dwell on this failure.
Classes resume February 22nd.

Punishment = Container Store (entirely overpriced crap!) & IKEA (crap within budget) shopping on a weekend
Grade = C - I did the shopping and shelf building, Adam did the actual reorganizing, since it's mainly his closet
Reward = a cup of the most delicious hot chocolate in the entire world! (with a side of pancakes and a mushroom & swiss omelet) courtesy of Richard Walker's Pancake House.

Reward #2 = all the stuff jammed into random crevices of the bedroom closet now has a home of its own, which may make Day 4's assignment of cleaning said closet much easier.

Neat Freak 101 - Day 2

Punishment = dump out sock drawer and throw away all mismatched pairs or things with holes
Grade = A - i got rid of 21 things! Plus Neat Freak extra credit for using some old socks to clean the kitchen floor.

knowing there was $200 waiting in the sock drawer made day two's assignment a breeze. and guess what? i found MORE money hidden in the bottom. being senile like this is like winning the lottery.

seeing as how my boo's got a tough school schedule this semester, i started feeling guilty for all the lazy non-learning i do and decided to "enroll" myself in a class i've desperately needed to take
- Neat Freak 101 - a beginner's guide to organizing your life.
unfortunately this is an entirely imaginary and self-taught class so i'm not really sure how to begin but here goes nothing...
week one is entitled Crime, Punishment & Reward
Here are the assignments:
• clean out t-shirt drawer - donate at least 10 things to goodwill
• clean out sock & undies drawer - throw out at least 10 things
• clean out closet - resell clothes or donate at least 10 things to goodwill
• rearrange living room and get rid of old couch
• build shelves in the hall/mailorder closet so bath towels have somewhere to go
Today's Class -
Crime = being unable to shut my shirt drawer because it's too full, even though i RARELY wear t-shirts.
Punishment = dumped out drawer and ruthlessly narrowed down its contents.
Grade = B - Goodwill will soon have 13 new shirts!
Reward = bought & read something that's the equivalent of a gossip mag - Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea.
And of course, the reward of now being able to shut the drawer!

best of all, it turns out i'm one of those crazy old ladies who hide money everywhere! apparently at some point i thought it would be a good idea to hide 2 $100 bills in that shirt drawer. and it sure was. i promptly re-hid the money in the sock drawer as motivation to continue these lessons.

this has been a totally depressing day and like some stupid perfect patty world in a phillip k. dick book, i am online bathtub hunting, for no reason other than escape and wishing the room below was somewhere near. somewhere by a beautiful body of water in the middle of nowhere, where i could take a bubble bath, drink a glass of wine and have a good cry.

these furless ladies are all in a zoo in germany and supposedly suffering some sort of unknown, possibly genetic ailment.
i don't know about that (and suspect overexposure to plastic!) but think it's revealing how similar they look to prehistoric models you'd see in the natural history museum.

pack your bags and your sugar cubes QUICK! i just found out the American Miniature Horse Registry Convention is November 5 & 6^th in Orlando, Florida...and that's in about ten minutes.
after a weekend trip to a tiny two-pony (extra-tiny) town – Julian, CA – and a mad email exchange with a girl who lives with a unicorn, the miniature pony infatuation has been fully reignited.
if Orlando doesn’t happen tomorrow (and i’m not really into Florida or having any money or traveling at the speed of light at the moment so it won’t), there is a mini pony chariot race next September in Tulsa that probably shouldn’t be missed.
start saving your pony pennies now!
until then i’m tiding myself over with the thought of getting Babiton a best friend for life from Toad Hill.

it seemed like such a waste to fill this spice container with spices, mostly because once filled...we'd have no idea what was in them. so. i got some moss and made 12 mini terrariums.

quite a satisfying project that corresponds well with our recent foray into the world of micro-farming.
many a homegrown meal has been enjoyed from the basil, parsley, arugula, rosemary and waaaaayyyy too spicy peppers growing on the porch!

as a caveat, i want to state...while researching how to make one of these green beauties, i learned...yes, moss takes forever to establish itself and yes, it is environmentally not nice to do massive amounts of moss harvesting.
i guess to counterbalance that i'd suggest only using small amounts of moss to limit environmental impact.
that being said, i, of course, live in a dry, essentially moss-free terrain and had my mailed to me from the east coast.
whoops. will make up for this eco-blunder some other way.

every year, post-birthday i vow to shape up. and then proceed to do absolutely nothing about it.
this year - wii mii isn't gonna let that happen.
i bought a personal trainer in a box and am taking the 30-day challenge.
we'll see how it goes.
today's day one and after a glass of champers and a 25 minute workout, i feel awesome, even though it's freaking hot doing kick boxing and inline skating in a non-air conditioned house.
today's calories burned = 109
calories in a glass of champagne = 91
so far, so good. time for lunch!

and if you want to know what my motivation is...
i have no idea how to fulfill this dream but i want to ride an ostrich. and figure i should probably shed a couple pounds before subjecting a giant chicken to that.

In honor of Memorial Day’s decree that it’s finally ok to wear white shoes (like anybody follows those old lady rules anymore), I spent the day thinking about how that’s kind of a weird mandate since most animals turn white in the winter.
And then I started thinking about how much I like white animals.

Living with one mostly white cat, I realize there is a definite negative to having a wandering white ball of fluff in the house…namely insanely easy to spot fur on everything you own.

nobody’s signing me up as an Iron Chef contender any time soon (Star, I’ll leave that genre to you) but since we’re smack dab in the middle of artichoke season, I do want to share this yummily successful and easy grilled artichoke recipe, made from the random assortment of stuff we usually have in the fridge:

Most Important Ingredient –
2 – 400 heads of artichokes (I really don’t care how many you eat, but eat them because they’re really good at cleaning your blood and liver)

Marinade –
¼ cup olive oil
¼ cup balsamic vinegar
¼ cup tamari
¼ cup water
a big splash of lemon juice
a heaping spoonful of chopped ginger
another heaping one of chopped garlic
cracked pepper

the ¼ cup measurements work well for 2 artichokes but if you make more, you can make more artichokes or have extras for a tasty dipping sauce.

just use a knife to chop the top and very bottom of your artichokes off, then scissors, (they’re easier to manage) to snip the poky tips off of the outside leaves.
put each artichoke on its own sheet of tin foil then dig in there and pull the artichoke apart a little to let the marinade sneak into the crevices.
mix all the marinade ingredients up and pour it all over the artichokes, aiming mostly for the middle heart part.
wrap ‘em up and pop them on the grill, in the oven (425 works) or even in a nice little campfire.
i really don’t think you can overcook them but they’ll take at least 45 minutes to an hour to get nice and soft.

then dig in!

it’s a totally sloppy meal but makes me feel fancy and i think i’m addicted.

This year's Antique Street Faire will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2009 From 9am to 5pm. Once a year, La Mesa Boulevard is closed and Antique dealers from far and wide set out their wares. Reminiscent of an old fashioned Midwest flea market, there's live music and entertainment. All of our restaurants, coffee houses and pubs in The Village prepare special fare!

i woke up super early and super excited, got there and realized, i hate antiques and i hate antique enthusiasts.
or anyone who likes to get into enthusiastic conversations with me just because i glanced at their junk pile.

Per usual, the new digs have wood paneling so, renting or not, wallpaper is not an option.
But I can still dream!
I’ve trolled through this site for years, decorating pretend houses and deciding on pieces that would make good wall art.
That pattern's too dark to look any good over wood paneling but comes in other colors, like this that might work -
I think I mostly am just attracted to that picture because we’ve owned or have owned most pieces of furniture in the picture at one time or another.
But furniture SUCKS when you're moving, so this is a great idea for making a headboard and if it seems like too much effort to dismantle the current bed for a move, I may just incorporate this somehow in the new place.
And this…this is a great idea for how to make use of that totally underused piece of furniture - your couch!

If couch surfing/slightly homeless stints count, the count would be higher but the legitimate grand total I think is…

iceland's hot! these days (and not just from global warming), which gives all of us a reason to believe in elves.
and yes i do believe.
at age 6 i SAW the head honcho elf himself go up our chimney and no stupid grownup spoilsports will ever convince me otherwise.
luckily Enid Blyton alway's had my back and she was awesome, grownup AND played a big role in my refusal to actually becoming like any of them : )

with Paris fashion week underway, i guess it's time to talk a little fashion smashion'.
specifically, fashionable hair dids.
hair dids with funny names.
stylists insist on pushing THE QUIFF and i just Cannot get around a hairstyle with a name that makes me laugh like that.
i blame Gwen Stefani for this 50's/80's (two decades that tend to depress me if they don't involve ice cream) look that keeps resurfacing but it's popping up more and more, and being a girl who gags at the smell of hairspray and can't use a curling iron without leaving burn marks, i probably won't ever try it out.
yes ladies can wear it but it's the boys who made it a sensation:

soooo....i've decided to leave that 'do to the menfolk and get a quiff i could really love:

it may only take 8 or 9 hours to travel from the bottom of California to San Francisco but if you wanted to make it take a week, here's my imaginary travel itinerary (and yeah, i'm slowly making them non-imaginary one by one) -

day one:
Shadow Mountain Lodge, Julian, CA - staying in the Gnome Home maybe. the tree house is pretty neat too...it's hard to choose. make it a two night stay and get some famous Julian pie!

day two:
The Parker, Palm Springs, CA - An uber-mod Jonathan Adler designed oasis, I can vouch for this one. And last time we got the Glutton's Delight ($200 free food spending spree), which made it doubly fun. But i forgot to try the Lavender Martini so it's time for another visit.

day three:
Castle Wood Cabins, Big Bear, CA - A+++!
Like getting locked up in a weird ride at Disneyland after hours.
Actually, the outside of this place is totally adorable but some of the rooms look really creepy (ie. the Gone with the Wind Room?) except for the two gourmet ones - the Castle and the Treehouse.
Those two...totally worth it.
Plus snow, which isn't really going to happen at any of the other hotels on this imaginary trip. And a town full of awesome thrift stores.

day four:
Arrowhead Springs Resort, San Bernardino, CA - this one's REALLY imaginary.
it's not even open yet or maybe even ever again.
i think mainly because of environmental concerns regarding some stupid golf course for some stupid golfer choads who insist on building giant water guzzling playgrounds in deserts.
geez, i hate golfers!
especially if they're in any way keeping the rest of us from enjoying this posh Dorothy Draper decorated former wonderland.

actually forget ever making this a hotel. i want to win the lottery & then just live here.

day 5:
any shitty dive motel, Los Angeles, CA - this one's purely personal after living at the ol' Ace Motel (the website makes it look way nicer than it really is. where are the hookers?). Now all dive motels make me happy & nostalgic.

day 6:
Madonna Inn, Santa Barbara, CA - so overdone and full of old sideways-inspired wine tasters but i don't really care. the only thing that gets hard is deciding on a room. so far the Love Nest or Just Heaven are at the top of the list but the Cave Room would definitely do just as well.

day 6:
The Victorian Mansion, Los Alamos, CA - well, you have to stay somewhere when you're in Los Alamos.
This one doesn't look like a theme hotel from the outside but you'd be surprised.
I think i'd opt for the gypsy room and kill someone if they stuck us in the 50's diner room.

day 7:
the Pigeon Point Lighthouse Hostel, Pescadero, CA - yay a hostel!
especially because i'm imaginarily out of money by this point.
i'm not saying it happened, especially since the top of the lighthouse if off limits, but somehow it seems like there was some smoking of something and an amazing view that may or may not have taken place here years ago.

day 8:
oops. it's been 7 days and we never made it to San Francisco.
eh. oh well.
if you want to skip it, head to Tahoe for another snowy adventure & finish up in style in the Graceland Room at The Fantasy Inn

giant white robe, tall furry slippers, no pants, sleep-filled eyes and a ghetto sideways ponytail.

Grab some mukluks, mittens and the powdered donuts because April’s travel agenda has been set and from what I've heard, a mustache cruise beats a ride any day.
Plus, I don't care how creepy it is, I want to sit on one of these fellow's lap and tell him what I want for Christmas (miniature horse, conversation pit and a rich benefactor).

only if you wake up in trailer parks will you understand the wonderfulness that it is to wake up to SWAP MEET SATURDAY!
so many treasures, for so little money and tottering social piles of old people who don't know about ebay.
on this week's unplanned shopping list:
this amazing pimpass arc lamp that was a bit of a bitch to get home but so worth the $30 -

and this receiver so we can finally listen to records again -
(notice within 15 minutes of bringing any new items into the house, the cats have already claimed favorites)

what i'm not including pictures of are the magic bottle spice rack, samurai sword, early 1900's gun holster, children's books, bb guns, sock monkeys, 60's owl night light and red fur-collared leather coat that also made it home.
all bought while toting bloody marys and still in our pajamas. (and fitting in quite well, i might add)

but until those pics surface,,,here's some mimi entertainment.
give this kitty some crumpled paper and she'll play fetch for hours.
...especially late night and early morning hours.
